Check your Site's Popularity

Today I received an email selling a desktop software program for $37 that would check your site's link popularity with four search engines. What a great idea! But what a waste of money! Yes, it is important to know (and increase) the number of sites that link to you, because this will improve your position in many popular search engines. But you do NOT have to spend money to do this check easily from your desktop.
